“A Hush Descended on the City…”: Hidden Histories and Radio Remembrance

Is Hidden Histories a micro-FM station, a sound installation, an audio tour, or a local history trail? Perhaps it is none of the above, or perhaps all four. The existence of such a project in some ways exposes the lack of a critical sound-based vocabulary, especially when attempting to portray particular instances of the convergence of oral history and electronic media in their distinctiveness and social context.

A new public wireless interface: Hivenetworks successfully launch 'Street Radio' in Southampton

On Friday the 14th of March 2008 ten 'street radio' nodes went live in Southampton narrowcasting Hidden Histories -- stories from Southamptons Oral History Archive selected and arranged to correspond with the location of the 10 nodes.

Listening

Another listener at Node 07. Some people did seem to get quite into it and the feedback was quite overwhelmingly positive.

Hivenetwork Crew

Hivenetwork crew, from left to right: Wolfgang Hauptfleisch, Alexei Blinov, Cieron Edwards. Do they look happy? Yes. Are they tired? I guess so, especially Wolfgang who had to come down to Southampton the day before to solve some last minute problems.

Oral History Experts

The three ladies in this image either work for Southampton City Council heritage services or support the OHU as a volunteer. They took their time to listen into each node and apparently enjoyed it.

Hivebox on Lambpost near Titanic engineer's memorial

Well, I guess it's a variation on a theme, those nondescript boxes on light poles. They are pretty hard to photograph which is maybe the reason why I took so many images of them; another reason might be that I was so happy to see them up there and hear them working.

The box in the image is node 07 and it plays stories about food of the poor and aspects of domestic life. For some reason this node has one of the best receptions, acoustically speaking -- it can be heard clearly from quite far away.
