Erlebe ich gerade einen Funktionswechsel in mir selbst? Diese Frage habe ich mir gestellt, als ich nach Begriffen für den Wandel gesucht habe, den ich gerade durchmache. Natürlich lässt sich das erst rückblickend beurteilen. Dieser Text hier wird also vielleicht irgendwann mal ein Text über einen Funktionswechsel gewesen sein.

Stell dir vor, du kommst in dein Zimmer, so wie du es mehrmals am Tag tust. Doch heute ist etwas anders. du fühlst dich unruhig und unzufrieden und weißt nicht weshalb. Und so schaust du dich zum ersten Mal seit langer Zeit wieder aufmerksam und bewusst in deinem Raum um. Er ist eigentlich gar nicht mal so klein, er wirkt nur sehr beengt. Ringsum stehen Regale und Schränke an den Wänden, die vollgestopft sind mit allem möglichen Zeug. Teilweise quillt es heraus oder liegt herum, notdürftig gestapelt und zu wackeligen Bergen auf Regalen und Schränken aufgetürmt. Sogar die Fenster sind so zugestellt, dass kaum noch Licht ungehindert eindringen kann, geschweige denn ein bisschen Luft! Als du das so siehst, bist du kurz froh, dass noch nichts eingestürzt ist – du musst dir allerdings auch eingestehen, dass du nicht abschätzen kannst, wie lange dieser Zustand noch halten wird.

Auf jeden Fall wird es Zeit aufzuräumen. Nein, eigentlich musst du radikal ausmisten! Mal wieder eine neue Ordnung reinbringen und dich von all dem alten Tand befreien. Plötzlich hältst du diesen Zustand keine Sekunde länger aus. Weg damit! Voller Tatendrang legst du gleich los.

Das Teil da zum Beispiel, das fandest du eigentlich schon furchtbar, als du es damals geschenkt bekommen hast! Angenommen und behalten hast du es trotzdem, sogar dich bedankt und ein bisschen so getan, als würdest du dich freuen. Weg damit!

Es kommen auch Kisten zum Vorschein, die du nicht ohne Grund irgendwann mal in der hintersten Ecke hast verschwinden lassen und die du seitdem vergessen hast. Sie sind dick eingestaubt und verströmen den Hauch einer dunklen Ahnung. Du nimmst sie zögernd zur Hand, legst sie dann aber lieber schnell zur Seite und mit einem unguten Gefühl in der Magengegend setzt du sie auf deine imaginäre, viel zu lange To-Do-Liste.

Und dann sind da ein paar Dinge, die du mal angefangen hast zu lesen oder zu bauen, oder die Skizze einer Idee, die du nie umgesetzt hast. Du nimmst sie in die Hand und fragst dich, wie du das nur konntest. Auf einmal erscheinen sie dir vertraut und gleichzeitig aufregend, so als hätten sie nur auf dich gewartet. Oder ist es umgekehrt? Am liebsten würdest du sofort dort weitermachen, wo du aufgehört hattest, denn die Entdeckungen scheinen gerade perfekt zu deiner Lebenssituation zu passen. Aber kurz bevor du dich endgültig verzettelst, legst du sie auf den Stapel der Dinge, die du definitiv behalten willst, und du kannst es kaum erwarten, dich weiter mit ihnen zu beschäftigen.

Immerhin kommst du jetzt an den Punkt, dass die wirklich unnötigen und veralteten Sachen bereit sind, weggeworfen zu werden, was du auch unverzüglich tust. So räumst du nach und nach alles aus, wirfst weg, sortierst. Wenn du allerdings mal wieder kurz aus der nahen Betrachtung der einzelnen Objekte auftauchst und dich umblickst, musst du feststellen, dass dich mittlerweile ein unfassbares Chaos umgibt. Eingeklemmt zwischen Stapeln, Kisten und wahllos ungeordnetem Zeug kannst du kaum noch den Raum durchqueren. Kurz spürst du, wie dich ein Anflug von Verzweiflung erfasst, aber du reißt dich am Riemen. Ein Schritt nach dem anderen!

Jetzt könntest du im Grunde anfangen, die Regale und Schränke wieder einzuräumen. Aber während du noch kurz alle abwischen willst, musst du feststellen, dass das eine oder andere Regal nicht mehr brauchbar ist. Du schaust sie dir mit wachsendem Unbehagen nacheinander mal genauer an:

Da ist zum einen der große Einbauschrank: Auf einer metallenen Plakette, die daran angebracht ist, steht in großen Lettern: BILDUNG. Dieser Einbauschrank war standardmäßig Teil der Einrichtung – ihn rauszureißen wäre dir nie in den Sinn gekommen, und ist darüber hinaus laut Vertrag verboten. Die Ordner und Kisten darin gehörten zum Schrank, sie passen scheinbar perfekt in die dafür vorgesehenen Schubfächer und du hast sie, ohne groß darüber nachzudenken, genutzt.

Aber in letzter Zeit ist hier immer mehr dazugekommen, das eigentlich gar keinen Platz darin findet, Bücher von Form und Inhalt, für die der Schrank nicht vorgesehen wurde – du bist dir nicht einmal sicher, ob es überhaupt erlaubt ist, diese Bücher in diesen Schrank zu stellen. Teilweise haben sie jedenfalls die Bretter aus den Angeln gehebelt, was das ganze Konstrukt reichlich wackelig wirken lässt.

Du überlegst noch kurz, diese unnormierten Bücher, die querulierenden Gedankenblöcke und rasant wachsende Wissenssaat irgendwie in den Einbauschrank zu integrieren, aber du musst schnell feststellen: Die Form des Schrankes lässt nichts zu, was von dem Standardmaß der Schubfächer abweicht. Und auf einmal spürst du, wie sehr dich dieser Koloss Zeit deines Lebens eingeschränkt hat: Wie viel Lebensenergie es dich gekostet hat, dich in sein Ordnungssystem einzufügen! Welche deiner Gedanken und Bedürfnisse in diesem Schrank nie Raum greifen durften! Du bist einen Moment lang fassungslos darüber, dass dir das vorher nie bewusst geworden war, und darüber, dass du all deine latenten Widerstände gegen die Nutzung dieses Schrankes immer als dein persönliches Versagen gedeutet hast.

Was willst du nun tun? Die Schubfächer und Bretter umnutzen oder den Einbauschrank ganz umgestalten? Kannst du ihn weiter nutzen, ohne dass er dir seine Form aufzwingt?

Du lässt dich auf den Boden sinken, nur kurz ausruhen. Mal wieder Luft holen.

Du lässt den Blick durch den Raum schweifen und betrachtest die umliegenden Regale.

Da steht Soziale Beziehungen, ein altes Familienerbstück, das deine Eltern dir zu deiner Geburt geschenkt haben. Seit deiner Pubertät hat es von dir ab und zu einen anderen Anstrich erhalten – alles in allem ist es aber noch dasselbe Stück geblieben. Direkt neben der Tür hat das klapprige, etwas vergilbte, schmierige Regal Krankheit seinen Platz. Von deinen Eltern wurdest du diesbezüglich immer mit einem vorwurfsvollen Blick bedacht, und auch dir bereitet dieses merkwürdige Mobiliar Unbehagen. Trotzdem hast du es in der Vergangenheit immer wieder dazu genutzt, damit deine Tür zu blockieren, wenn dir mal wieder alles zu viel wurde und du dir nicht anders zu helfen wusstest.

Da sind Möbelstücke, die mangels besseren Wissens falsch zusammengebaut wurden. Manche sind morsch und feucht, sie riechen nicht besonders gut, und weshalb du sie nicht bereits entsorgt hast, kannst du dir nicht erklären. Einige, eigentlich viel zu viele Schränke und Kommoden sind billige Massenprodukte, die deine Freunde auch alle haben – von ihnen hast du erfahren, dass sie nicht nur bei dir bereits nach kurzer Zeit Verschleißerscheinungen zeigten und unter der schicken Oberfläche Material von schlechter Qualität zum Vorschein kam. Manches hast du dir nur angeschafft, um damit vor anderen angeben zu können – Hauptsache höher, belastbarer, effizienter. Andere Regale wiederum erscheinen dir heute klobig, altmodisch und ohne Persönlichkeit.

Du bist ratlos. Du spürst deine wachsende Ungeduld und Unsicherheit, und du wirst von einer Achterbahn der Gefühle mitgerissen. Du wolltest doch nur kurz ein bisschen ausmisten! Du wirst wütend. Am liebsten würdest du die Regale einfach zerschlagen und zerstören! Aber liegt das in deiner Macht? Vielleicht wäre es besser, einfach wieder alles schön ordentlich zurückzuräumen und so zu tun, als wäre nichts passiert. Einfach so weitermachen wie bisher. Aber das geht nicht. Nein, du kannst und willst nicht mehr zurück. Was willst du nun tun? Du schließt die Augen. Atmest tief durch, und hörst in dich hinein… Wie hast du dich entschieden?

Here is my latest essay on the state of the art of internet culture, published in the e-flux Journal 04/14. It is also a review of the book by three New York media theorists that I knew well, McKenzie Wark, Eugene Thacker and Alex Galloway called Excommunication. I wrote a short review as an intro to an email interview that I did with the documentary film maker Astra Taylor (USA) on her new book entitled The People’s Platform–Taking Back Power and Culture in the Digital Age. The Webmagazine based in Vienna, Austria called Eurozine was interested to published the piece. Here it is. Enjoy. Juan Downey’s video works were mainly focussed on two major series, Video Trans Americas and The Thinking Eye. Both were motivated by Downey’s desire to understand his own identity in relation to cultural, political and economic systems. Late Barbarians featured a work from The Thinking Eye series, highlighting a shift in Downey’s focus toward Western civilization as a means by which to decipher the self through cultural consumption. 

Prior to this series was Video Trans Americas, which marked the beginning of Downey’s use of the documentary form, in investigating issues of transcultural difference and similarities in relation to his own European and South American identity. Downey travelled through South America and made highly subjective and idiosyncratic accounts of his experiences of living with indigenous peoples there. Prefiguring contemporary experimental documentary practices by artists, Downey challenges ethnography in relation to the documentary form and the question of objectivity: “We could say that a documentary is a form of subjectivity, a work that oscillates between different degrees of subjectivity, therefore we cannot speak of either objectivity or of subjectivity. This paradox of the documentary is what I find most interesting, which is why I have come to use elements of fiction, fantasies, to transmit ideas.”

 

Before embarking on his journey through South America, Downey Outlined his aims for the project in the journal Radical Software:

“Many of America’s cultures exist today in total isolation, unaware of their overall variety and of commonly shared myths. This automobile trip is designed to develop a holistic perspective among the various populations inhabiting the American continents, thus generating cultural interaction.

A videotaped account from New York to the southern tip of Latin America. A form of infolding in space while evolving in time. Playing back a culture in the context of another, the culture itself in its own context, and, finally, editing all interactions of time, space and context into one work of art.

Cultural information (art, architecture, cooking, dance, landscape, language, etc) will be mainly exchanged by means of video-tape shot along the way and played back in the different villages, for the people to see themselves.

The role of the artists is here conceived as a cultural communicant, as an activating aesthetic anthropologist with visual means of expression: video-tape.

The expedition will leave in July and return to New York in early September, where the video-tapes will be edited and presented in final version.”

“Throughout the video, the laughter of the Yanomami serves as an aqueous laugh track, which, like all laugh tracks, processes one of our most authentic, spontaneous, and involuntary modes of engagement into a signal of the inauthentic, the staged. Along with the clear elements of stagedness in The Laughing Alligator—from Downey’s range of outfits, variously a tie and jacket and Yanomami face paint and haircut, to the postcard image that stands in for the mythic figure of the alligator’s wife—the traces of laughter in such an ostensibly serious scene indicates the inauthenticity of many ethnographic recordings, which are often positioned as objective and transparent documents. ”

 

 

 

Chris Marker’s Pictures at an Exhibition was featured in Late Barbarians, a tour around a virtual gallery Marker created in Second Life. The camera pans through a seemingly unending set of corridors leading to canonical images from art and world history that Marker has worked over and added to, in often iconoclastic and humorous way.

“In 2009, the Harvard Film Archive hosted a truly historic live encounter with Chris Marker in Second Life. Marker, who has often been sited in the form of his avatar in Ouvroir, generously agreed to lead a guided tour and offer commentary on his latest creation, including special single-channel presentations of his video pieces Silent Movie and The Hollow Men, an occasion that was made all the more meaningful by the then recent announcement that the museum would be dismantled later that year. ”

“Between 1970 and 1980, her relationship with the new video medium laid down the conditions of a praxis rather than a form. The artist experimented with various types of live recording, with no cuts or scenes, in which she showed herself at some length in simple frames, apparently styleless. The presence of this slowly moving body refers to certain dance and performance practices, but it is rather from a cinematic tradition, capturing things in real time, that the whole work seems to stem. Otherwise put: using video as an objective and neutral instrument for measuring time and space, in the tradition of artists like Andy Warhol or Bruce Nauman. Video. Surveillance. But these pose periods sometimes freeze and crystallize in a fleeting way as romantic pictorial compositions (in Sonnet and Passion de l’été pour l’hiverin particular), not to say like certain icons of modernity (Courbet’s L’Origine du monde, in Hommage à…). This indifference on the part of the act of displaying, which is both apathetic and shameless, combined with a sterilization and stripping of the frame, refers the viewer in the end of the day to the responsibility of his own way of looking at things, between fascination for the suspended split second and disenchanted voyeurism.”
