what do three-quarter chapters taste like?

Occasionally we share bits of our writing in process here -- without even necessarily wanting others to read it -- because just the simple act of publishing in a safe space i think can push the writing a long a little, give it a bit of electro-magnetic wave energy!

if i recall correctly by now we have shared abstracts, uni-required reports, and bit of chapters here. i am always waiting for that time when i have one FINISHED and FINAL draft of just one of my chapters to post here -- but it is never happening -- it is like a mirage i can see in my mind's eye but i am never getting closer to it

so i have decided to post one part of a 4 part chapter here ... not in the hope that you will read it (i honestly don't particularly want you to!) but so it can be skimmed perhaps, so we can share notes if we feel like it, one what chapters look and feel like in their stages of being written up/down/into/around....

when i was in sydney in february i had a great meeting with one of my supervisors and he, lovely uber-rationalist that he is, yet again restructured my thesis outline for me, got me to drop one chapter (yea! i dont have to do a literature review..what a big bloody relief that is), and amalgamate 2 others.

i also am allowed to write LONG chapters.... i had read a good book on hw to write a thesis., which suggested that the perfect chapter length is 12,000 words..so i had been aiming at this..but my case studies were each getting longer and longer (with no end in sight) and so much more to be written..so now i have been given permission to write chapters that are each 18,000 words long (apart from the intro and preamble which will be shorter).

i dont care if my thesis will be fat and ugly.... and it will also be short and squat....

anyway...this was a great relief because it means i can give up all pretence of trying to write something that is elegantly crafted.and just focus on the cotent... of the individual compenents

what i am posting here is 1/4 of 1 of my 3 case study chapters. i will also post my revised chapter plan when i rejig it later....

i guess this chapter section is a second draft -- and i hope an almost final draft... i will send the whole chapter to my supervisors by end of may, incorporate their suggestions..then i will just have another 6 chapters to write/complete/start.

i plan to submit in october or november...and my scholarship runs out at the end of june...

i wonder what stage of writing you are at..lindsay you are always writing but perhaps not in the chapter form yet,,and armin.,i am not sure where u r at...with actual chapters...

regarding research methods..my other 2 case studies ghave been based on interviews conducted with the protagonists of the projects..but here i have not yet (and clearly now never will becos of time) interviewed the subjects (only 1 informal untaped interview) so it is all based on secondary sources..mainly web-based texts by the protagonists

i dont have time or inclination to read books on the themes that pertain to this chapter..so i have been speed-reading book chapters and then using Dragon Naturally Speaking voice-to- text software to trabscribe bits i think i can weave in as quotes... erhem..to give the impression i have read a lot more deeply than i have

but perhaps this is anyway acceptable academic practice??!

ni my masters thesis i had a lot of fun playing with almost hypertextual notes to each chapter..that were huge..perhaps 15,000 words of Endnotes that were placed at the end of the thesis..i decided for my phd thesis i wd be more restrained..and so i am having footnotes, but trying to limit them

however, i porbably still have too many and they r too verbose

well..thats enuff of a rave... and please dont feel obliged to actually READ the chapter..its more of a look type of thing..or u cd just read 1 page if u wanted...

u can se ehow obsessively i do word counts eahc day..right now i am aiming to write 600 words per day,,but mainly i am falling short of this goal

academic work seems like one small failure after another!

i will pay someone to proofread the theiss when it is finished, and fix my grammar, cos i am bad with grammar, especially verb tenses

a pearl necklace

hi

it is quite a bit of work, and daunting!
and am a bit confused about the footnote vs endnote + biblio tie-in

still the book idea is quite interesting..especially for my 3 case study chapters which will each have 4 main sub-sections, plus and intro and an outro...

becos it is so much (definitely not immaterial!) labour i think i will wait till each of my hong kong chapter sub-sections have been finished, and then fact-checked by the hong kong crew, and critiqued by my supervisor..then i can begin building this book as an experiment with the drupal book format... and then if anyone else comments on the content...i can take those comments on board when i rewrite the final draft of the chapter later in the year

whew! i am exhausted even thinking about all these steps...

---------------------------------------

on another matter, i sent the uRL of my peer2peer text published on TNL to my UTS colleague and IT&Disorder wizard Jon Marshall as i am meant to be reworking this text for publication in a UTS e-journal. he sent me back some really good comments and suggestions, which gives me a clear idea of how to improve the text... so when i have written up the journal version within the fortnight, i will attach it to that HTML version (as i really cant be stuffed Re-HTMLling this...)

there is probably some interesting (self?) research to be done or mulled over in terms of how publishing our bits and bobs on TNL forms one pearl in a necklace of ideas which are continually transforming (through the input of other writers/readers), sometimes radically, sometimes subtly.

my P2 P text was first a clump of writing, then an OpenOffice slide show at a workshop, then an HTML illustrated text at TNL, and soon another clump of text, and perhaps on the e-journal it will be another HTML work...so that is 5 pearls for just the one text...

hope all on the uncommns are well..very sorry i am not commenting on other ppls texts/fotos right now..if i ever finish this hong kong chapter i think i will feel so liberated that i can take in other ideas and give some commentary..but for now i am just a silent witness

this week i am
- listening to philip glass - Cello Octet - Glass Reflections, + Bach JS - Solo Cello Suites - Anner Bylsma, + Angelo Badalamenti Twin Peaks - Fire Walk with me
-d/l'ing/viewing old pommie series House of Cards (excellent -political intrigue - d/led from thebox.bz)
- learning to cook hainanese chicken rice (amazing..put an organic chicken in a pot of boiling watre, turn the heat off, and it just cooks in the hot water and is totally delicious --it;s flavoured with masses of ginger and garlic)
- viewing with a friend - der baader meinhof complex (very violent, interesting, a bit confusing for a non-german or european in terms of who all the characters were)

htmlling

I would always opt for the htmlling version. of course it is quite a bit of work. but you could upload the endnotes in bulk to the biblio and use the bib tag, similar to fn it creates a footnote with link to the biblio database. I can help if help needed.
you could start posting it as a standard research journal entry and later, by using the 'outline' function, in the edit menu (on of the tabs on top) integrate it into a 'book' in drupal language.
with a book you can create subheadings which get translated into clickable table of content, such as I did here http://www.thenextlayer.org/45RPM

a book can also be exported in printer friendly format
if help is needed, I am here looking at a long bank holiday weekend. maybe i go to the park and do some reading there but mostly I will be here, doing research and writing myself

i will post a version of my hong kong chapter sections here

over the next week or so

i need to check with the main HK ppl i quote that they are cool, they have already read the action media/ tree campaign section and sent thru corrections, so i can publicly post that without worry..it's just devoting the time to format it for TNL as there r quite a few footnotes and URLs,,,

but it is a long section - 6,000 words..is this too long to post as an HTMlified document? it wd be a mighty long page...is it better to post the sub-section intro, and have it link to a PDF of the chapter sub-section?

the reminder about the fourth estate has been v useful, and i have to control myself not to go down another historical pathway.

art theorists

both Ranciere and Badiou seem to have quite a bit of currency in art theory, by which i mean social, political, philosophical writing that is relevant for art, not necessarily about art. this website is also quite good regarding the content, not the design http://www.after1968.org/index.php/texts/view/8

i will post my chapter outline in my research blog

thanks for your comments armin (nice header BTW) - i think i am too tired to say much tonight, but i appreciate your comments and hopefully will feel like / and make time for responding to all the threads running through TNL from us all over these next 3 days,,,as i reckon there is a lot to mull over and reply to

but for now you prompted me to fix up my chapter outline b4 retiring to bed with my laptop and an ep... so i will post it separately +include a page of my main supervisors comments to me back in 2007 .. maybe it is interesting to share the kinds of dialogue with have with our supervisors in this semi-private space! i have to keep returning to these notes from James (supervisor) to remind myself what my "4 lines of analysis" are... since they are the backbone of the whole thesis

re "I wonder if you have a chapter where you explain the framework for all the three case studies?"

yes... that was summarised in my Doctoral Assessment paper which i posted last year and i am pretty sure u (armin) read...it will be in my research blog.. i havent touched that document since..so have nothing new to add! but of course it will be something i need to rewrite for my chapter on "investigating info-capitalism"

ps should i be reading Ranciere or Badiou?
ive tried Latour "(reassembling the social") as ppl i respect thought i wd love it ..but... i can't fathom him at all..i was trying to read him at the beach, maybe that was a mistake

good things come to those who glean

Dearest

as much as I agree that it is a sign of good character to be humble and not overstate one's achievements, it is also not good to move into the opposite direction too far and always talk oneself down. The first paragraph already is so good that when reading it I first thought it is a quote from some famous research theorist like Focault or Ranciere or Badiou;-)
No, seriously, this is a quoteworthy passage:

The process of research feels like navigating a vast river by executing a series of hops and leaps across those stepping stones which draw your attention. At a certain point you realise that the path you are taking along the currents of ideas and potentialities is leading somewhere in particular, even if you did not know this at the outset. From the infinite set of possibilities offered by the river you have semi-intuitively selected one course, and your focus sharpens. There might be regret for the journeys now not pursued, but also pleasure in finally understanding where you are heading.

Also, you were right to advise us to "have a look at it". The way you designed the table of contents is very instructive, a good way to organise one's work, an example to follow or draw conclusions from. Then throughout the writing is very good and informative and mostly dense, economic in a positive sense. Thus, I learned already a lot about asian citizen journalism. There are just occasionally sentences which do not quite fully work such as this one

Hong Kong In-Media is a paradigm of a heterogeneous mode of contemporary cultural activism

that something can be a paradigm of a heterogenous mode is maybe difficult to get, because what is a paradigm, isnt it a heterogenous mode? or is it homogenous? Or maybe you want to say that it is part of the paradigm of contemporary cultural activism and the heterogenous through me off course? I am sure you will spot such things in any further rewrites anyway.

another small point is the following:

"Whereas mainstream corporatised media exists to return a profit for shareholders (mainly through sale of advertising 'real estate'),"

I would be slightly careful with such strong assertions. while it is true that corporate media exist to create profit for shareholders, most of them, if we are talking of the press for instance, are still fulfilling some of the functions that make it the fourth estate, that is, providing checks and balances for parliamentary democracy, for example. that they have frakked it up and mainly seem to be there to be selling ads is another story, yet a free press is guaranteed by constitution in most liberal democracies, it is a constituent part of the system. Sometimes I also make the same mistake that my writing sympathises too strongly with the subject covered, especially if it is an activist cause.

But overall the writing as such and the thesis too is all very advanced. I'm envious. Sometimes when we are working on something big we feel we are always still at the bottom of that hill or only halfway through, yet sometimes actually we have already reached the end of the upward struggle and there is enough there that now it takes on a dynamic of its own. I think you have reached that point. This work needs probably mostly some more polishing and some crucial final clearings. because you have so meticulously listed the word count, I can say think you are right, you should cut the sub-chapters down to the aim length, - cutting it by the current proportion between what you have and what you aim it should benefit the work, which is something I say from a very general excperience and not specifically about your thesis.

I hope I will soon be able to read your second part. At this point also I would be interested in the overall chapter structure, just as headings, table of content? have you posted that already or have I missed that? I wonder if you have a chapter where you explain the framework for all the three case studies? Eventually at some point in the future, the thesis or chapters of it should be published in the open tnl, as you did work that others will benefit from. It also ties in with some areas of my thesis and if you finish earlier, which I hope will be the case, I can quote you;-)

my chapter

doll
this is where I am at
http://www.thenextlayer.org/node/795

it is basically the first chapter cum introduction, cum lit review, cum transfer report - some snippets of the transfer report missing as i split it into different parts. In the end the real first chapter will have to be different but for the time being it gives a good outlook on the future work to be done. thus, I think I have a plan and should be able to finish in between 12 to 18 months from now if i dont get too distracted with conference making and money earning

oh, and i will read your chapter, I already looked at, very colourful. your bibliography would be very enriching for our shared biblio, so i hope you find the time soon to test endnote upload
