cut-up experiment

reading again armin's thought-provoking Waves - art of deconcealement text just now a paragraph towards the end reminded me of something i had to write recently, a blurb, for an oz art&tech publication. and ive had lindsay's spooky silurian image in my head for days. so i just did a quick cut up, for fun. it made me realise how i miss working with 2 friends --together we occasionally work/play under the banner of identity_runners, and its a fully open source methodology of sharing everything for everyone ..if i get a chance i'll post sumething about our method

but for now, i post my little cutup of our stuff ..not to distract you, just for the sensation...

(can u tell that really i am procrastinating writing something 'serious' for a poetry reading this tuesday!)

The Sea-Devils were relatives of the Silurians in early 70's Dr Who, a sci-fi television programme in Britain. It is common knowledge that, even today, this low-tech series instills fear in young children causing them to take refuge behind the sofa...



As the artists 'go out' (into the bush, into the cabin log, the antarctic station, but also the 'electronic jungle' that is contemporary em city) they discover new spaces for thinking. The reduction of the possibilities, the forced redundancy of isolation opens new spaces around 'speculative objects'. The presence of such objects imbues us with special powers such as talking with non-humans (and humans) about things common and shared.



I tread lightly for there are ghosts everywhere. Wadjemup / Rottnest Island, Makrolab's temporary location, is Australia's largest deaths-in-custody site; its historic prison population of tribal Aboriginal men mirrors the waves of violent frontier expansion into the Western Australian hinterlands. Systems of migration, communications and weather provided the research frameworks within which Makrolab's guests created their own exploratory trails. The dolphins merrymaking over the Indian Ocean's coral reefs, the limestone tunneling lobsters, brazen quokkas and basking snakes offered temporary respites from the brutal migration of souls.

stone the crows!

"stone the crows" is an aussie expression but now i realise i dont have a clue what it means..maybe an exclamation of surprise..or a coincidence

last nite i cdnt sleep so instead of reading ,my bedside book on al quaida i started a novel written by a friend..its called "the stone crown" and its a kind of arthurian fantasy aimed at teenage readers i think..anyway...it starts with this girl kicking a dry stone wall around a forest ..and releasing a kind of ghost that has been trapped inside the stones....

stones in australian indigenous culture are important on many levels..the symbolic (they can be ancestors or spirit beings from 'the dreaming' of a country) and cultural....stones traditionally traded along song lines and trade routes...from the most northern part of the continent to the south were i live ..for example..red ochre from beaches near adelaide is found in the Top End...1000s of km away...the red ochre was used only for ceremonial purposes..to paint the body.... and as stones are traded so are the ancestral stories that go with them...

..the homeopathy stuff is intriguing....quantum vibrations...lindsay have u read "the elegant universe" by briane greene... string theory etc...he's probably got more recent books out now but that one was compelling...

the walls have ears (reposted)

I suddenly wondered where this saying came from... 'the walls have ears', sure it is laterally meant as 'lets be careful about what we say as someone may be listening', but where did it come from? i am thinking in the train of thought about the memory of objects again as in some indigenous cultures it is thought that stone absorbs all sound, and in some respects the stones choose to be where they are. this would mean that the walls definitely did have ears, and that using stone from other places or buildings to build anew, would take the memory of the previous location to the new site.

this goes along with the vision of the ghost that is released from its moment in time, the shamanistic views of the 'hidden' spirit landscape and how in modern science it has been suggested that we as people can 'modulate' certain things to produce differeing phenomena such as disturbance of electrical equipment. there is an old 1960's TV play called 'the stone tape' which i'm sure is a really dodgy low budget affair, but perhaps would be worth watching just for the subject... paranormal investigators go into a house and realise that one of their researchers is acting like a play button on a tape recorder and is somehow triggering the 'story' contained in the wall to re-play.

incidently, this goes along with the thought of the shaking of molecules of water (yes in homeopathy but also by other serious water researchers), whereby the breaking of the bonds between the molecules causes them to 'record' or 'copy' what is in the water at the time.... scientists would laugh, but i'm not a scientist. there is no way back to the grand-narrative, or the rhiozome for that matter, the only way is forward, downward, things breaking off into smaller and smaller parts, interlinking, quantum.
