This file presents just a few random samples from an interview with him about the need for a history of media art. Bob mixes his thoughts about the meaning of communications with his memoirs about working those technologies from the late 1970s onwards. The beginnings were characterised by the specifically Canadian situation, a vast country that needed telecommunications to keep its ends together.

http://tnl-6.local/node/1478#comments English Recording media art media art history Mon, 13 Jan 2014 14:53:45 +0000 Armin Medosch 1478 at http://tnl-6.local From Total Recall to Digital Dementia - Ars Electronica 2013 http://tnl-6.local/node/1472
Year by year Ars Electronica gets larger, greater and more successful. At the centre of this investigation are seminal exhibitions in the history of media art as well as my own curatorial practice. The thesis proposes that paradigm shifts in media art and society are closely linked and that studying those paradigm shifts through the chosen exhibitions provides insights into the interlocking dynamics of art, technology and social change.

http://tnl-6.local/node/1324#comments English Research Technopolitics media art PhD Peer Preview Group Technopolitics Wed, 23 Jun 2010 10:33:21 +0000 Armin Medosch 1324 at http://tnl-6.local Floating Structure: A Platform for Artistic Measurements and Research http://tnl-6.local/floating_structure
This text is the preliminary outcome of a research project going back to 2003/2004 and developed jointly by Franz Xaver and Armin Medosch. It has a theoretical and artistic dimension as well as an activist one. At the point of its inception stood questions relating to the crisis of art in informational capitalism. The project sets out to bring some clarifications by word and deed about the relationships between art and technology, art and science and the role of the artist at the beginning of the 21st Century.

http://tnl-6.local/floating_structure#comments English Research floating structure media art PhD Water Waves Wed, 10 Mar 2010 12:26:02 +0000 Armin Medosch 1307 at http://tnl-6.local Technological Determinism in Media Art (republished) http://tnl-6.local/node/1214
The most influential discourse on media art up to and around 1995 uncritically based itself on techno-science and the techno-imaginary which it creates. It offers a technologically deterministic interpretation of the relationship between societies and social change. This discourse was successful in institution building and is still very influential today, even though its foundations can shown to be problematic. This is the essence of my 2005 MA thesis on "Technological Determinism in Media Art" which I republish here due to difficulties with my old site.

http://tnl-6.local/node/1214#comments English Research Technopolitics media art technological determinism technoscience Technopolitics Tue, 24 Nov 2009 10:28:05 +0000 Armin Medosch 1214 at http://tnl-6.local Lovink on Media Art http://tnl-6.local/node/1132
As promised, Geert's chapter on media art from his book Zero Commments. I think some of points are valid, although on the whole the critique is too sweeping and presents a one sided picture of what media art is. Leaving all the critical threads out and then saying its all too conformistic if obviously a polemical move. My final opinion I have not been able to formulate as I feel I can currently not write an opinionated article. I would rather do more research and then write something well founded which does not need to be polemical to be convincing.

http://tnl-6.local/node/1132#comments English Research critique Lovink media art Uncommons Sat, 06 Jun 2009 11:45:37 +0000 admin 1132 at http://tnl-6.local Spectropia: Acoustic Space No. 7 http://tnl-6.local/node/990 Šmite R, Medosch A. 2008. Spectropia: Acoustic Space No. 7. Acoustic Space. 7 http://tnl-6.local/node/990#comments Waves electromagnetic media art PhD Waves Fri, 24 Apr 2009 11:08:39 +0000 admin 990 at http://tnl-6.local Die Zukunft des Körpers 2 http://tnl-6.local/node/941 Bechtloff D. 1996. Die Zukunft des Körpers 2. http://tnl-6.local/node/941#comments Research art media art PhD Fri, 24 Apr 2009 09:56:37 +0000 Armin Medosch 941 at http://tnl-6.local Media Mutandis A Node.london Reader - a Survey of Media Arts, Technologies and Politics. http://tnl-6.local/node/912 ed Vishmidt, Marina. 2006. Media Mutandis A Node.london Reader - a Survey of Media Arts, Technologies and Politics.. http://tnl-6.local/node/912#comments Research media art Node.L Reader Node.London PhD Fri, 24 Apr 2009 09:22:04 +0000 Armin Medosch 912 at http://tnl-6.local
